Will continue Atal Bihari Vajpayee's development agenda: Narendra Modi - Times of India

SAHARSA/MADHUBANI/DARBHANGA: BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Thursday promised to carry forward the development agenda of Atal Bihari Vajpayee in north Bihar.

Reaching Saharsa after filing his nomination papers at Varanasi, he said Vajpayee had tried to develop Mithila and Kosi regions. The Mahasetu on the Kosi was his dream project and the highways under his 'Golden Quadrilateral' scheme benefited the region the most.

After apologizing for coming two hours late and receiving a Mithila 'pagg' (turban) and angvastram, Modi said he would try to get all the north Bihar rivers interlinked to save the region from perennial problems of drought and floods.

Recalling the 1934 earthquake, he said the region developed fast and he would try to improve the condition of the farmers. Referring to Madhepura RJD candidate Pappu Yadav, he warned the voters against the 'jungle raj' under Lalu-Rabri rule and asked them to vote for BJP candidate Vijay Kumar Kushwaha, who quit the JD (U) recently. Draped in a saffron sari, Vijay's wife and suspended JD (U) MLA Renu Kumari also sought votes for her husband.

However, the NaMo rally at Madhubani was a touch-and-go affair. Coming more than an hour behind the schedule, Modi went straight to the mike and apologized to the crowd waiting under scorching sun. He assured the people that their 'tapasya' (penance) won't go waste.

Modi declared that election held in more than 300 constituencies so far had already decided to dethrone the Congress and its allies from Delhi seat. Comparing once again Rahul Gandhi's visits to the poor families with the ones to Tajmahal, Modi said the Congress vice-president has never tasted poverty and, therefore, can never know where the shoe pinches. On the other hand, he was born poor and experienced the pain of poverty at every stage, Modi said.

Exhorting the people to vote for development and good governance and the party's Madhubani and Jhanjharpur candidates, Hukumdeo Narain Yadav and Birendra Chaudhary, respectively, Modi said the poor and not the rich of the country have the first claim on the resources.

At Darbhanga, he described the people as 'bhagya vidhata' and said he would return the love Bihar has showered on him in the form of inclusive and all-round development of the state. "Aapka ye pyar sar aankho par, sau sau salaam," Modi said. Referring to Congress, he said, "Pahle haath jodte hain, phir haath milate hain aur mauka milne par haath ki safai dikhate hain (first they pay respect by joining hands, then shake hands, and getting a chance deceive the country)."

Observing that majority of the audience at the meeting were youths, Modi said the Congress in its poll manifesto in 2009 had promised 10 crore jobs, but did nothing. Modi asked them whether they or any of their acquaintances were given any job? They roared in the negative. An elated Modi charged the Congress with cheating the youths and requested them to punish it in this election.
