DU denies suspending its employees over Smriti Irani qualification row - IBNLive

New Delhi: There is no end to the controversy over the qualification of Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani. Delhi University on Saturday issued a statement clarifying that none of its employees have been suspended for allegedly leaking documents related to the educational qualifications of Irani on Friday.

The Vice Chancellor of the Delhi University issued a statement stating that the newspaper report on the suspension of five employees of the University is incorrect and no suspensions have been ordered.

Earlier in the day, Irani appealed to the University to reinstate the suspended officials. "Since the Delhi University is an autonomous institution I have put forth my personal appeal to the Vice Chancellor to reinstate the officials," she tweeted. She also added that, "In public life one should be open to scrutiny and criticism. So am I."

Delhi University Vice Chancellor issued a statement stating that no suspensions have been ordered over the case.

Her statement came minutes after senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh hit out at the Narendra Modi government for suspending the Delhi University officials. "Five officials of Delhi University suspended for leaking HRD Minster's educational qualification details! Does this government believe in transparency," Singh tweeted.

However, he also thanked Irani after she appeal to the University to reinstate its officials. "Thanks Smriti for appealing to Vice Chancellor of the Delhi University for reinstating the DU officials. Now let people of this country know your actual educational qualification," Singh said.

Another Congress leader Meem Afzal also hit out against suspension and demanded strong action against the false affidavit allegation. Afzal said, "It's regrettable that five lower level employees have been suspended without any inquiry. There is no action taken against the false affidavit. Perhaps the Prime Minister does not want that."

On Friday, the Delhi University suspended five officials for allegedly leaking documents related to educational qualifications of Irani, officials said. "Five of the non-teaching staff of the School of Open Learning have been suspended for accessing the confidential file and then leaking it," Malay Neerav, DU joint dean of students's welfare and media coordinator, said. "These are officials below section officer level," he said.

According to reports, the University had taken action against its employees after a Hindi daily published the leaked documents. The daily had written that Irani had taken admission in DU's School of Open Learning in 2013, but had not appeared for her examination.

Irani is at the centre of a controversy due to her educational qualifications leading to a full-blown war of words between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party. The Congress had alleged that Irani had misrepresented facts in her election affidavits.
