Modi invites Chinese premier to India, tells him China always a priority in foreign ... - Hindustan Times

Describing China as a "priority" in India's foreign policy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday sought greater engagement between the world's two most populous nations on trade and regional security.

Modi conveyed the message to Chinese Premier Li Keqiang who had called up the Indian Prime Minister to congratulate him on his victory in the general elections.

Li also conveyed Beijing's desire to establish robust partnership with the new government of India for further development of ties.

Premier Li is the first head of a foreign government to call up Modi since he took over as the PM.

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi is scheduled to visit to New Delhi early next month while President Xi Jinping is also expected in India later this year.

Modi also extended an invitation to Li to visit India for strengthening bilateral ties. The last Chinese head of state to visit India was Hu Jintao in 2012.

During the phone conversation, Modi told Li that China was always a priority in India's foreign policy and underlined his government was ready to make the most of the bilateral partnership.

The major outstanding issue between the two countries is the long, unresolved border – the countries share a roughly 3,400-km-long boundary -- where tension intermittently flares up over incursions.

But a range of agreements between India and China has managed to resolve tense situations from boiling over.

Analysts say if nothing else trade and business ties between the two largest emerging economies of the world are likely to strengthen in the coming years.
