JAMMU: Wondering over the stance taken by Bharatiya Janata Party over abrogation of Article 370, National Conference leader Devender Singh Rana Thursday claimed that even Jana Sangh founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee fully endorsed the special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir in the Indian constitution .

“How can they wish away this historical fact while fanning passions over the issue,” Rana said while referring to the debates of the Constituent Assembly wherein Mukherjee, in his capacity as a member, “never opposed the Article 370 and became a signatory to the Constitution.”

Rana was addressing a press conference at here . Rana, whose brother and Minister of State in the Modi government Dr Jeetendar Singh stoked a row over the issue, said that Article 370 was a bridge between Jammu and Kashmir and India.

“National Conference opposes any such move which jeopardizes the legitimate guarantee enshrined in the Constitution of India for the people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh,” he said.

“Article 370 cannot be abrogated. My party would appreciate a debate, which in fact has already been volunteered by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, with any political party across the country,” he said.

Rana said those speaking in favour of Article 370 were being projected as anti-national by vested interests. “This peculiar mindset is to be shunned,” he said.
