Girl dies after gang kidnaps, forces her to have poisonous drink - Times of India

SHIVAMOGGA: Thirthahalli town observed a bandh on Saturday protesting the death of 14-year-old schoolgirl who was kidnapped by a gang and sexually assaulted after being forced to drink an intoxicating substance.

Police sources said four youths kidnapped the class VIII student on Wednesday morning when she was waiting at a bus stand in the Balebyle area. They offered to drop her to the school, about 4 km away, but took her near a hill. There they allegedly forced her to drink some a poisonous substance.

Sources said the girl might have known one of the gang members, so agree to go with them.

According to police, when the girl started feeling drowsy, the gang tried to rape her, but fled when she raised an alarm. Hearing her cries, passersby rushed to the spot and found her unconscious. They informed her family, who then took her to a government hospital.

The shocked family decided to keep the incident under the wraps fearing social stigma. They shifted her to Manipal the next day (October 30) after her health deteriorated. They filed a police complaint after she died on Friday night.

As the news spread on Saturday morning, the town shut down.

The girl's body was cremated on Saturday.

Shivamogga SP Koushalendra Kumar said they have formed three special teams to nab the culprits.

Later in the evening, police said they have arrested one person. They said they waiting for the postmortem report to take the investigation forward. Sources claimed that the girl had narrated the incident to her grandmother.

Primary and secondary education minister Kimmane Ratnakar, MLA from Thirthahalli, was besieged by angry protesters when he rushed to the town from Bengaluru on Saturday evening after hearing the news.

Police reinforcements from Shivamogga tried to clear the way for the minister when he wanted to visit the girl's home. But the angry crowd shouted slogans against him and stopped him from going in. Police resorted to a cane charge to disperse the mob.

The minister urged the public not to take law into their hands and help police arrest the culprits.
