"We arrested him and granted him bail at the police station as the flight crew and co-passengers could not be examined that day. The flight had departed when we received the complaint. Our investigation is on," said RP Sharma, police commissioner, of Bhubaneswar. A case has been registered under section 354 A of the IPC.
Posted on YouTube on January 31, the video had gathered over 1.7 million views by Tuesday afternoon. In the video, the NRI Ravindra Jhunjhunwala (also known as Ravin Jhunjhunwala), is seen cowering in his seat, trying to hide his face, and apologizing, as the woman from behind the camera reproaches him for trying to touch her from the gap between the seats. Some other passengers had also reportedly shot the scene on their mobile phones. A second follow up video shows the man standing in what looks like the baggage claim area of the airport, this time being questioned and reprimanded by both the woman and another man, both off-camera. This time the man is seen offering a written apology for what he calls a "mistake". He also reveals here that he has a daughter. "Everybody makes mistakes in life. I made a mistake, a big mistake," he says, smiling awkwardly, then adds, "I am a father of a girl." The video went viral prompting praise on social media for the courage and quick-thinking of the woman.
The incident occurred on January 27 when the flight from Mumbai was about to land at the Biju Patnaik airport. The woman raised an alarm when Jhunjhunwala, seated behind her, allegedly tried to touch her. After the flight landed, she brought the matter to the notice of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel at the airport. Later, she lodged a complaint at the Airfield police station. Based on it, police registered a case against Jhunjhunwala, who stays in Singapore.
Speaking to TOI, Jhunjhunwala rubbished the charges. "My intention was not to misbehave with her. I accidentally touched her hand because of the jerk during landing. She is making a mountain out of a molehill," said Jhunjhunwala, whose family members stay in Bhubaneswar. "The video did not carry my version in which I apologized and said I accidentally touched her. I am going to file a defamation suit against her for tarnishing my image in social media," he said.
IndiGo Airlines said in a statement that their staff aided the victim in lodging an FIR. "An unruly behaviour was reported on IndiGo flight 6E 553 enroute from Bombay to Bhubaneswar on January 27, 2015. During the flight a lady passenger complained of misbehaviour from a co-passenger sitting behind her. Our IndiGo crew on board immediately alerted the Captain in command who further alerted the CISF staff and consequently the FIR was lodged in a local police station in Bhubaneswar. IndiGo is cooperating with the investigating agencies," says the statement.
