At least nine persons including a child have died and more than 40 people have been injured in a freaky train accident involving the Bangalore Ernakulam Inter-City Express on the outskirts of Bangalore.
Eight bogies of the train derailed after it struck a boulder that, according to railway officials, accidentally rolled onto the track in a mountainous section of the Salem line of the South Western Railway between the Anekal Road and Hosur railway stations on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border.
The accident occurred at around 7.33 am near the Bidaragere village around 40 km from Bangalore after the Inter City Express which runs daily between Bangalore and Ernakulam left Bangalore at 6.15 am.
Railway minister Suresh Prabhu has tweeted that the accident was caused by a boulder that fell on the tracks in the ghat section that the train was traveling on.
“Unfortunate rail accident in Karnataka, Boulder fell on track in Ghat section, train hit it. directed all sr officers to rush with full help,” the railway minister tweeted from his @sureshpprabhu twitter handle. Additional commissioner of police for railways R P Sharma said that nine persons were among the dead. Rescue operations were still on and the toll could increase, the police official said.
Two of the dead persons have so far been identified as Etira Antony, 57, and Aman, 9. A total of 42 persons have been reported injured including 17 who are in a critical condition. All injured persons have been shifted to various hospitals in Bangalore and the Anekal area.
Railway police, civil police, fire and emergency service department officials, national and state disaster relief teams are working along with local villagers to rescue many passengers who may be still stuck in the mangled heap of the bogies that slammed into each other following the derailment.
“We are yet to ascertain the identities of the majority of the deceased persons,” RP Sharma said.
