Goa police nab D-gang member at Saligao - Times of India

The Goa police on Sunday arrested sharpshooter Shyam Garikapatti, a member of fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim's gang, from Saligao, superintendent of police Karthik Kashyap said in Panaji.

Garikapatti had been hiding in Saligao for eight years under a fake identity.

The sharpshooter was involved in the JJ Hospital shootout of 1992 and had been on the run from the Mumbai Police for 10 years after jumping parole in 2003, Kashyap said.

The 50-year-old gangster was found living in a rented apartment with forged documents and a 9mm pistol. The Goa police stormed the apartment with weapons, given his history as a gunman. Despite being wanted he appears to have flown out of the country several times using fake documents which identified him as Govind Rao. He was in contact with Dawood's gang leader Subhash Thakur and was also involved in 18 major crimes, police sources said.

Garikapatti, known as Black Scorpion, because of his role as a hit-man, hails from Hyderabad but was based in Pune, where he was working for a real estate firm. His foray into crime was the alleged attack on residents of Vadrai coastal village, in Maharashtra, on April 30, 1991, the SP said.

The sharpshooter was convicted under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) and was sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the shootout at JJ Hospital.

Garikapatti had earlier been imprisoned in the Maruti Jadhav murder case, police officials said. He is also suspected to have been involved in an attempt on film director and producer Rakesh Roshan.

The Goa police are interrogating Garikapatti and will hand him over to the Mumbai police in a few days.
