India concerned over Maldives' ex-prez arrest - Times of India

NEW DELHI: India on Monday reacted cautiously to the developments in Maldives and expressed concern over the arrest of former president Mohamed Nasheed again. Nasheed was arrested on terrorism charges on Sunday even though thes offence cited relates only to his order as president to remove a senior judge in 2012.

"We are concerned at recent developments in the Maldives, including the arrest and manhandling of former president Nasheed," foreign ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said. PM Narendra Modi is scheduled to travel to Male on March 15 and sources said there was no rethink over the visit yet.

"The government of India reiterates its commitment to supporting the people and the government of Maldives in their quest for peace, development, prosperity and democracy," Akbaruddin said.

Nasheed's Maldivian Democratic Party had recently joined hands with Jumhooree Party, which defected from the ruling coalition, to carry out protests against the government.
