Centre ready to order CBI probe into Karnataka IAS officer's death - Calcutta Telegraph

New Delhi, Mar 19 (PTI): The government on Thursday said it was ready to order the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe the death of Karnataka IAS officer D.K. Ravikumar as soon as the state recommends it.

The government's assurance came after heated exchanges between Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party members in the Lok Sabha over the reported suicide of Ravikumar, said to be an upright officer who had come under pressure from the land mafia.

The House also witnessed a spat between members of several parties over the law and order situation in states such as Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. On one occasion, the House had to be adjourned for 15 minutes due to the pandemonium.

Prahlad Joshi of the BJP raised the issue during Zero Hour. Joshi said the law and order situation in Karnataka was in a bad shape and the state government has not accepted the demands of the parents of the 35-year-old officer to recommend a CBI probe.

Congress members from Karnataka rejected Joshi's contention that the state government was not sensitive to the issue of death of the officer.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the issue was flagged by a delegation of MPs who met him and said the Karnataka Chief Minister has informed him that after receiving more details, he would send a detailed report to the Centre.

If the state government recommends a CBI probe, the Centre will immediately order an enquiry by the central investigating agency, Singh said.

Earlier, the proceedings of the House were adjourned for 15 minutes amid pandemonium created by Left members from Kerala who wanted to raise the issue of alleged violation of Dalit Act in the state.

As Speaker Sumitra Mahajan rejected their demand to suspend the Question Hour, the Left members rushed to the Well of the House demanding that they be allowed to speak. The Speaker disallowed their demand saying the issue related to the state and cannot be allowed.

As the Left MPs demanded that they be heard, K Suresh of the Congress raised the issue of an alleged attack on a Dalit man in Tamil Nadu. Members of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the ruling party in Tamil Nadu, immediately opposed him.

AIADMK leader P. Venugopal said an incident of eve teasing was misinterpreted by the media as an attack on a Dalit and added that a few persons have been detained in this regard.

When S.S. Ahluwalia of the BJP raised the issue of the alleged rape and murder of a 75-year-old nun in West Bengal and demanded dismissal of the state's "woman Chief Minister" if she fails to protect women in the state, a heated exchange of words followed between Ahluwalia and Trinamul Congress member Kalyan Banerjee.

Despite several attempts by the Speaker, Ahluwalia and Banerjee continued to hurl accusations against each other, prompting the Chair to say that she would arm them with sticks so that they can settle the matter.

"Very good...you are wasting the time of the House," she remarked and expunged the accusations from the record.

Mahajan said rapes and atrocities on women should not be used to launch political attacks on rivals.

Prahlad Patel of the BJP said Madhya Pradesh Finance Minister Jayant Malaiya and his wife were robbed on the Jabalpur-Nizamuddin Express train near Mathura on Thursday and said similar incidents have taken place on the same train before.

He demanded that the Railway Protection Force be provided with more freedom to use weapons when such incidents take place.
