December 16 Delhi gangrape: One of the convicts blames girl for savagery - The Indian Express

Nirbhaya, nirbhaya gang rape "When being raped, she shouldn't fight back. She should just be silent and allow the rape," said Mukesh Singh.

In a shocking claim, one of the convict of the December 16, 2012 gangrape has blamed the victim for the brutal sexual assault on her. In an interview from jail for a BBC documentary, Mukesh Singh claimed that had Nirbhaya and her friend not tried to fight back, the gang would not have not have inflicted the savage beating, which led her to death.

Describing the killing as an “accident”, Singh said, “When being raped, she shouldn’t fight back. She should just be silent and allow the rape. Then they’d have dropped her off after ‘doing her’, and only hit the boy.”

On the fateful night of December 16, 2012, Nirbhaya and her friend were returning home after watching a cinema when they boarded a bus in which six people, including the driver brutally raped her and thrashed her friend. The girl later died from her injuries while undergoing emergency treatment in Singapore. The incident was widely condemned and generated widespread national and international coverage.

All the accused were arrested and charged with sexual assault and murder. One of the accused, Ram Singh, died in police custody on 11 March 2013 in the Tihar Jail. One of the accused who was a juvenile at the time of the incident was convicted of rape and murder and given the maximum sentence of three years’ imprisonment in a reform facility.

On 10 September 2013, the four other accused were found guilty of rape and murder and three days later were sentenced to death by hanging. The judgment was challenged in the Delhi High Court but it upheld the guilty verdict and the death sentences.
