Haryana CM dodges posers on Vadra land deal probe - Times of India

CHANDIGARH: Five months into power, one of BJP's main poll planks in Haryana isn't an issue its government seems too keen to talk about. On Sunday, chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar dodged questions about the progress in the probe into Robert Vadra's land deal.

During an interaction with mediapersons in Chandigarh, Khattar didn't give direct answers to questions about his government's stance on the land deal. "Abhi darjanon aur mahatavpurn kaam hain, pehle woh dekhna hain. Hum unpe kaam kar rahe hain abhi (There are dozens of other important issues. We have to take care of those first)," was the CM's response.

Even after repeated queries by journalists, Khattar refused to say anything specific on the matter, only saying, "The government is panning to evolve new ways to ensure that such things do not happen in future."

The land deal between Congress president Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law and realty major DLF had become one of the main issues in the state assembly elections, held in October, as well as parliamentary the polls held in March last year. The BJP had showcased it as an example of widespread corruption in land deals in the state and promised action against the wrongdoers.

The Bhupinder Singh Hooda-led Congress government had legalized the deal at the fag end of its tenure and just before the announcement of model code of conduct for assembly polls in Haryana.

Narendra Modi, then BJP's prime ministerial candidate, had said in a rally at Hisar: "They know that after the elections, damadji (Vadra) will not get clearances for illegal deals. During the election process, they have dared to take such a decision."

To a query on his government's stand on IAS officer Ashok Khemka, who was chargesheeted by Hooda for cancelling the Vadra-DLF land deal, Khattar said, "It is an administrative and internal matter." Hooda had also described it as "an administrative matter".

On another query about giving plum postings to some senior bureaucrats, who had also enjoyed important postings during Hooda's tenure, Khattar said, "These officers are not loyal to anyone. They are loyal to the government."

In his first face-off with the media at Chandigarh press club since becoming CM, Khattar appeared spontaneous in responding to most media queries

About Kaptan Singh Solanki's speech in Punjab assembly wherein he had sought due share of the state in inter-state waters under riparian principles, Khattar said that it is a coincidence that Solanki is governor of both the states and has to present policies of both the state governments. He said that his government is committed to get SYL water

On issue HSGMC issue, whose constitution was opposed by the BJP, Khattar said that matter was in the Supreme Court and his government would implement its order

Khattar praised the role of Haryana police in carrying out operation to arrest defiant preacher Rampal from Satlok Ashram in November last year. He also added that the attack on journalists by cops was not intentional

CM said that when he took over, a "transfer industry" prevailed in the state and his government was now evolving a computer-based transfer policy to bring in transparency

When asked about implementation of Swaminathan committee report on MSP, Khattar passed the buck to the central government. On the delay, Khattar said that decision could not be taken immediately because the Union government has to decide after considering the availability of resources
