Parties like Congress and others are trying to indulge in politics of vote bank in the name of the farmers out of sheer envy, the Union minister said.
Misra was replying to the query why farmers were up in arms against the bill if it was so good and served the better interests of the peasants.
Realising they have no issue to corner the Modi government with, Congress and other parties are bent up on agitation in the name of land acquisition bill.
Misra clarified that the present bill was amendment of the already passed land acquisition bill 2013. Land acquisition bill was formed after the first bill came into existence in 1984, he said and added that everyone knows who was at the helm of affairs in that period.
"But, no attention was paid towards the interest of the farmers," said Misra, adding that effort was made to draft a new bill on land acquisition during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, but it was not supported by the alliance partners who are now in the Opposition.
Even though the BJP supported the bill which was drafted in a hurry by Congress in 2013, later Congress-ruled states like Maharashtra and Haryana wrote letters to Centre saying the bill was too complicated and the same needed to be simplified, said Misra. After Modi government came to power, a meeting attended by rural development ministers of all the states was held, he added saying that in the meeting, several ministers demanded simplification of the bill. In the 2013 bill, there 13 projects were given relief and the new bill has included them. With this, land could be acquired only after giving compensation four times the circle rate even under these 13 projects, Misra concluded.
