Park Street rape victim dies - Calcutta Telegraph

Calcutta, Mar 13 (Agencies): The 2012 Park Street rape victim whose case was initially dismissed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as a 'fabricated incident' died at a city hospital here on Friday morning after suffering from an undisclosed illness.

The woman, in her mid-thirties, was raped by five men in a moving car on February 6, 2012, after she was given a lift at night from the city's party zone.

The incident triggered nationwide outrage when the administration initially termed it a "fabricated case" to malign the Trinamul government, which was then less than a year old.

Pallab Kanti Ghosh, the Calcutta Police joint commissioner for crime, said details about her ailment were awaited.

"She passed away in the morning. She was suffering from health problems and got admitted to a city hospital for last few days," Ghosh told PTI.

While three of the accused are behind bars, two others, including the prime accused, are still at large.
