In housing societies all over Pune, it was the children that led the charge with water guns and fistfuls of coloured powder. Holi celebrations began early in the morning and continued till late afternoon.
The adults joined in only later in the day, usually keeping away from the "wet and wild" part of the action. They limited themselves to powdered colours, especially the herbal versions that are all the rage these days.
"I was a little sceptical about bringing my son to participate in the celebrations, but I was happy that most people stuck to using dry colours. I also got to enjoy the festival along with my friends in the neighbourhood," said Kirti Teli, who participated in the revelry along with her 19-month-old son.
For the young however, it was no holds barred with most of them on a Holi party-hopping spree.
"I started the day playing Holi in my housing society with some of my friends from school. It was amazing as I had not met them in a long time. Later, I went to a friend's place where friends from college joined in and things got rather wet with balloons being tossed around. We then all went over to another friend's place," said Madhav Jha, a college student.
"I had so much fun playing Holi today. I think it is a lot safer, especially for women out here. I have never played Holi on the streets like this. Where I come from, things can become very rowdy on Holi and girls usually try not to go outside the colony," said Surbhi Jain, a college student who is originally from Gaya.
Perhaps the most excited to join in all the festivities were the foreigners. "I have never seen anything like this. I really liked how everyone got together to celebrate the festival. I have just come to India and don't know a lot of people here, but I went to a party and everyone joined in," said Alokita Nicotri, a French exchange student.
Once they were done playing with colours, many pooled in money to organize snacks and refreshments.
"We made arrangements for lassi, chips and hot kachoris. It was a lot of fun. Even though we had colours smeared on our faces, eating and drinking along with friends was enjoyable. We didn't want to go back to clean up as we were catching up after a long time," said Karthik Sawant, who organized the grub for his housing society.
