Under attack from the Congress for “snooping” on its vice-president Rahul Gandhi, the BJP Saturday slammed the party for “politicising routine formality” and “manufacturing” issues to give “employment” to its workers.
“Technicalities and mere formalities should not be looked through a political prism. The Congress is seeking employment for its unemployed workers, so it is manufacturing issues,” BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said.
Patra said even BJP leaders including party chief Amit Shah and senior leader L K Advani had been asked to fill a similar performa. Senior opposition leaders like M Veerappa Moily, Naresh Agarwal and K Chandrasekhar Rao also were given the same.
Congress leaders alleged that Delhi Police officials had a few days ago visited Rahul’s residence seeking personal information about him. The party has charged the BJP government with “political espionage and snooping” on its leaders.
Hitting back, Patra said: “Why does the Congress think that any routine exercise on the Gandhi family is prohibited. This attitude reeks of VIP culture.”
“It is a routine exercise being carried out for years. If Congress wants to make this a political issue, it shows its mentality that it considers itself above the law,” said BJP spokesman Sudhangshu Trivedi. “Doing politics on such issues is part of their character,” he added.
The BJP also questioned the Congress vice-president’s absence. Rahul is apparently on a vacation to an undisclosed destination. “We never made an issue on Rahul Gandhi’s whereabouts… He is a very important person in the country but the country does not know where he is. He is an MP but Parliament does not know where he is,” he said.
Trivedi also alleged the Congress had resorted to snooping during its own rule when reports of bugging on the then finance minister Pranab Mukherjee had surfaced but no satisfactory answer was given.
