VK Singh, Pooja Bhatt attend National Day of Pakistan celebrations at the ... - Times of India

Before the brouhaha over VK Singh's tweets, the National Day of Pakistan celebrations at the Pakistan high commission recently were a rather congenial event, even if they saw some unlikely co-attendees.

Indian politicians, diplomats from various countries, industrialists, sportspersons, artistes and, of course, Kashmiri separatist leaders, took part in the celebrations. The invitees were spotted congratulating Abdul Basit, the Pakistan high commissioner to India, and his wife, Summiyah, as they enjoyed a sumptuous dinner at the star-studded evening, which later also saw a fair share of drama.

When the chief guest reacted on twitter after the function

General VK Singh, minister of state for external affairs, who was the chief guest on the occasion, left in a jiffy from the do. He shared the dais with Basit as the latter spoke about Indo-Pak relations. "India and Pakistan would not want to leave a legacy of hostility and conflict for the future generation but pass on a legacy of peace and co-operation. For that, we need to work together," Basit said. He also stressed on the role that women have played in their nation building.

"From Fatima Jinnah to Malala Yousafzai, women have played an equal part in taking the country forward," he said. Singh choose to say nothing on the dais and after spending some time at the gathering, preferred to leave. It was speculated that Singh, the former Army chief, wasn't amused by the fact that Kashmiri separatist leaders like Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Syed Ali Shah Geelani were also present at the venue. Singh, who refused to answer journalists' questions at the do, later, posted a few tweets emphasizing '#Duty' and '#Disgust'. Actors Pooja Bhatt, Sonya Narain Jehan and Imran Zahid, Zaheer Abbas, Guillermo Rubio, ambassador of El Salvador, Ubaldo Garcia Ruiz, ambassador, Republic of Costa Rica, RS Jaura, Aslam Khan and Rana Sodhi were also spotted at the do.
