The 74-year-old man has been an important face in Indian cricket for over 30 years, ever since he was appointed the secretary of the Rajasthan club in the late 1970s. Dalmiya had become a member for the Rajasthan club in the 1950s, according to Tehelka .

Dalmiya joined the BCCI in 1979 and was appointed its treasurer in 1983, the same year India won the World Cup for the first time.

1990 was an important year for Dalmiya, when he won the elections for the post of BCCI secretary by a single vote. "Dalmiya’s elevation to the post of secretary began a stint that remains unmatched in the history of Indian cricket administration. His rise coincided with the financial turnaround of the Board," said the Tehelka article.

He was chosen as the BCCI secretary again from 1993-94 and 1996-97, after which he resigned and took over as the ICC president in 1997.

In November 2001, Dalmiya was involved in a tussle with the ICC when Sachin Tendulkar faced allegations of ball-tampering on the fifth and final day of the second Test match between South Africa and India. "The ICC decided to back their man, but that led to it being savaged in the Indian press, with accusations that it was biased. India board president Jagmohan Dalmiya demanded Denness be removed from the final Test," an ESPN Cricinfo article said.

Dalmiya became the BCCI president in 2001 and held that post till 2004. In 2013, he was appointed as the interim president of BCCI after N Srinivasan resigned due to the IPL spot-fixing scam.

"Years of working as an insider in the cab and the BCCI have given him connections and a reach unsurpassed in the administration of the game. He also has an insider’s take on every aspect of the game’s administration. And this is perhaps what explains the wall of silence that surrounds Dalmiya within the cricketing fraternity," said the Tehelka article.
