Chennai bomb blasts: Security beefed up in Trichy - Times of India

TRICHY: Security was beefed up on Thursday at the Trichy Junction railway station and other important places in the city after twin blasts in a train at Chennai Central railway station.

All the passengers were screened and their luggage was thoroughly checked using metal detectors at all the railway stations in the district. A team, including senior police officials, was deployed at the Trichy railway station following orders from C Senthil Kumar, inspector of railway police and additional commissioner Kalaiarasan.

The senior officers supervised the entire procedure and the passengers of Vaigai Express were thoroughly scanned. Sniffer dog teams too searched for any explosive objects in the train. The officials did not want any untoward incidents to happen as an alert was sent across all the important railway junctions in the state. The Trichy-Karaikkal Express and the Jan Shatabdi trains were also checked, said senior officials.

According to railway officials, high-end security screening equipment was kept in place. However, certain passengers were of the opinion that security in the railway stations should be in place always so that incidents like Chennai blasts can be prevented in the future. He further said though scanners were installed in the station, none of them passed through it and police too never bothered to insist passengers to use it. The Trichy Junction railway station that always wears a deserted look with not much of security, on Thursday, was buzzing with railway police continuously checking passengers.

Similarly, security was also tightened at the Trichy international airport. Police teams were deployed at major bus terminals like the Central Bus Stand and Chatiram Bus Stand. Patrol teams were also sent at vital points across the city.
