Dr Jaishri Namdeo was standing by her groom on Thursday when Anurag Singh allegedly stormed the stage at Bhopal and shot the 29-year-old in the head from point-blank range.
Panicked guests immediately disarmed the gunman and beat him mercilessly until police arrived and took him away in a bloody and battered state.
A single gunshot wound to Dr Namdeo's neck killed her.
Unconfirmed reports suggest the pair may have been romantically involved in the past.
Singh remains in custody while police investigate what could have motivated the public attack.
