Modi denied permission for a rally in Varanasi - Economic Times

NEW DELHI: With the district authorities of Varanasi denying permission to Narendra Modi for one of his rallies, BJP on Wednesday went into a huddle to discuss and formulate an alternate plan.

According to Times Now, BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi was scheduled to address two rallies in Varanasi on Thursday, but was denied permission for one of the venues on the grounds that it was 'already booked'.

Senior BJP leaders Arun Jaitley and Amit Shah met in Varanasi to formulate an alternative plan, reported Times Now. Modi is contesting the Lok Sabha polls from two constituencies, Vadodara and Varanasi. Varanasi goes to polls on May 12, as a part of the final phase of elections.

On Tuesday, Jaitley released the party's 'Vision Document' for the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat, and said the people of this temple city should introspect before choosing a candidate.

He said that "it is a historic opportunity for the voters of this city to choose a government, the master key of which will be in the hands of the people of this temple town".

"On one side there is (BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra) Modi and on the other there is Congress which has a candidate backed by a person like Mukhtar Ansari (Quami Ekta Dal MLA lodged in jail in a murder case)," Jaitley said at a press conference here.

"The people of Varanasi have to decide that what kind of candidate they want to choose," he added.

Meanwhile, ET on Wednesday reported that Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi may take the battle to Varanasi just as Modi took the battle to Amethi. And Modi's critique of Nehru-Gandhis in his Amethi speech on Monday was the trigger for this rethink on the part of Rahul and Priyanka.

People close to the Gandhis, who spoke to ET on condition they not be identified, said Rahul Gandhi is almost all set to address a rally on May 9 in Varanasi while Priyanka Gandhi is "closely considering" conducting a road show on May 10.

May 10 is the last day of campaigning. The move is intended to provide energy and momentum to Congress candidate Ajay Rai, a person familiar with the strategy said. Another person privy to the discussions said the moves were strategised after Modi's "attack on Nehru-Gandhis in his Amethi rally."
