New Delhi: When counting began at 8am for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the first leads indicate that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is ahead of other parties.

The leads show BJP candidates have fared well in postal ballots. The process of counting begins with the postal ballots and the votes in the electronic voting machines (EVMs) will start at 8:30am.

The initial leads show the BJP is leading in 38 seats and the Congress in 17, lagging in many of its strongholds in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. In Karnataka, where the Congress is expected to perform well, mainly due to the goodwill of the state government, it does not seem to be leading in many seats.

The 16th Lok Sabha elections, which ended on Monday, saw the highest ever turnout in India for any general election. A total of 551.3 million people—or 66.38% of the total electorate—came out to vote in an election which was spread over a month and nine phases.

Clear trends should emerge by 11am, according to the Election Commission.
