Mumbai: The 30-share benchmark S&P BSE Sensex extended gains on Monday after Narendra Modi -led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won a clear majority in the Lok Sabha election.
The Sensex provisionally closed 1%, or 241.31 points, higher at 24,363.05, a new high, while the National Stock Exchange’s broader 50-share CNX Nifty rose 0.69%, or 50.05 points, to provisionally end at 7,253.05 points.
Among gainers, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel) jumped 15.52% to Rs.265, Coal India Ltd rose 12.66% to Rs.389.40, Tata Power Co. Ltd advanced 8.66% to Rs.98.45, while NTPC Ltd climbed 11.64% to Rs.147.20.
The S&P BSE Power index and S&P BSE Capital Goods index were the top sectoral gainers, up 10.15% and 8.34%, respectively.
Shares of information technology (IT) companies declined as the rupee appreciated against the US currency on expectations of continued dollar inflows. Shares of HCL Technologies Ltd shed 4.54% to Rs.1,303, Infosys Ltd declined 4.85% to Rs.3,023.70, while those of Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS ) fell 6.38% to Rs.2,020.
Shares of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd lost 4.83% to Rs.583.60 per share.
