Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday wrote to Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi and congratulated him on the BJP’s victory in the Lok Sabha elections.
The BJP had a blowout election victory, winning 282 of the 543 seats in the Lok Sabha.
The NDA, led by the saffron outfit, won 336 seats. The Congress suffered its worst result, winning just 44 seats.
Senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu had earlier said it was shocking to see Sonia Gandhi and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi not having the courtesy to greet Modi following the massive mandate received by him.
“Though American President, British Prime Minister, scores of prime ministers from across the globe, including our neighbours Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have greeted Narendra Modi, the Congress president and vice-president do not have the courtesy or the basic culture of India to greet the person who has got such a massive mandate,” Naidu had said.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh congratulated Modi for leading his party to victory even before the counting of votes was completed on May 16.
